POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION: Genetic and Neurodevelopmental mouse models relevant to schizophrenia
A Postdoctoral position is available immediately (February 1, 2012; start date is flexible) in the laboratory of Dr. Susan Powell, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, University of California San Diego. Research in the laboratory focuses on translational research with relevance to neuro-psychiatric disorders, specifically schizophrenia. Current research in the lab focuses on (1) establishing neurodevelopmental models of schizophrenia, (2) determining the critical window of both susceptibility and prevention in these models, (3) behaviorally characterizing novel genetic models of schizophrenia, and (4) examining gene x environment interactions in mouse models of schizophrenia. The position available is to work on a R01 award examining the role of oxidative stress in two neurodevelopmental models of schizophrenia – perinatal NMDA antagonist administration and isolation rearing. This project utilizes a combined developmental, pharmacological, and genetic approach to understanding behavioral effects of early life insult. The position involves (1) behavioral assessment of mouse models, including startle and prepulse inhibition, fear learning and memory, social approach, locomotor activity, and cognitive function; and (2) assessment of oxidative stress markers and interneuron integrity in collaboration with Dr. M. Margarita Behrens. The candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in other research projects including behavioral characterization of novel mouse lines of susceptibility genes for schizophrenia, behavioral pharmacology of psychoactive compounds, and development of EEG procedures in mice. The candidate should hold a Ph.D., have a strong conceptual and experimental background in neuroscience or physiological psychology, experience in general neuroscience techniques (e.g. immunohistochemistry), as well as be proactive, independent, hardworking, productive, and enjoy working as part of a team. The most competitive candidates will be those with at least one first-author publication in the field and should be committed to eventually becoming self-funded via grant applications. Please send your CV, a brief statement of current and future research interests, and three references to: Susan Powell, Ph.D.; sbpowell@ucsd.edu
